About Neck Crypt

Neck Crypt is the most substantial game on the site: a roguelike dungeon crawl through a randomly generated floor of seven normal rooms plus a treasure room and a boss. Your head steers the character continuously while the character fires automatically, the same split that makes Neck Invaders work — one job for your neck, none for your hands.

You start with 3 hit points and a base fire rate of one shot every 520 milliseconds, moving at 340 units per second with a full second of invulnerability after taking damage. The treasure room holds a charm that permanently modifies your run, and charms stack: fire rate, damage, homing shots and more, so a run that finds the right two early plays completely differently from one that does not. Enemies range from crawlers with 2 hit points that chase you slowly to flies and projectile-throwing enemies whose shots travel at 190 units per second — slow enough to dodge with a neck, which is the constraint every enemy in the game was designed against.

A full clear takes ten to fifteen minutes. The score counts rooms cleared, charms collected and coins, and your best is stored locally.

How to play

  • Move your head — the character walks that way continuously; shooting is automatic
  • Arrow keys or WASD — keyboard movement
  • Clear a room of enemies to open its doors, then move on through the floor
  • Find the treasure room for a charm that permanently upgrades the run
  • Three hit points to start, with one second of invulnerability after each hit

Tips & tricks

  • Clear the treasure room early. Charms are permanent for the run and they compound, so a fire-rate charm found in room two is worth far more than the same charm found in room six.
  • Use your invulnerability window. After a hit you have a full second of immunity — that is your chance to walk through a crowd you would otherwise have to go around.
  • Circle-strafe the crawlers. They have 2 hit points and move at only 70 units per second against your 340, so they are free damage if you keep moving and never let them corner you.
  • Enemy projectiles travel at 190 units per second, well under your walking speed. You can outrun almost anything fired at you — standing still to line up a shot is the mistake, since you fire automatically anyway.
  • Fight near a door. Rooms are large and doorways give you a corridor to retreat through, which matters most against the Warden at the end.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a full run?
Around ten to fifteen minutes to clear the floor, which makes it the longest game on the site.
Is the dungeon the same every time?
No. The floor layout is randomly generated each run around seven normal rooms plus a treasure room and a boss room.
Do I have to aim and shoot?
No. Firing is automatic so that head control only ever has to handle movement.
Is Neck Crypt free?
Yes, free in the browser, no download or account, and it also plays on the keyboard.
Where does my camera video go?
Nowhere — tracking runs on your device and no video is uploaded.
